Donation Information for the
MICHAEL E. MCELVAIN SCHOLARSHIP

To memorialize his life and the time he dedicated to pursuing music, The Michael E. McElvain Scholarship has been established at DePaul University by Michael’s dear friends and colleagues, Geoff and Linda Hirt. The scholarship will be an annual grant in DePaul’s newly created Collaborative Piano program to help educate and train up-and-coming collaborative pianists.
Michael was an alumnus of DePaul University, having earned his Master’s of Music Degree in Piano Performance in 2012. During that time Michael’s emphasis had been on solo and instrumental collaborative performing and conducting. In 2010 his piano professor suggested that he could broaden his skills set by learning more about vocal music and foreign languages. As fortune would have it, he auditioned for DPU’s Linda Hirt, Founder and Artistic Director of the Italian summer program Musica nelle Marche. He was accepted and the rest is history. It was in Italy that Michael fell in love with opera coaching. He eventually became a respected faculty member of MNM. Michael went on to pursue his Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Michigan, studying under Martin Katz, one of the world’s renowned pianists, and was accepted to the prestigious Merola Opera Program in San Francisco for their 2020 / 2021 program.
This scholarship will have Michael's name on it and will live at DePaul as long as DePaul and the School of Music exist. Donations to his scholarship can be made by check or through the DePaul’s website. Please see below for details.
